    Mountain
    Bukhansan National Park
"Procession of Large Granite Rocks Create a Superb View"
Mt. Bukhansan, situated in the northern part of Seoul, is beautiful throughout the year. Designated a national Park in 1983, the mountain is 78.45km wide, has 6 districts and extends out into Gyeonggi-do. The name Bukhansan means "big mountain" in the north, and it is also called Mt.Samgaksan. Mt.Bukhansan has such smooth curves that the large granite rocks sometimes look as if they would slide down the mountain, and the sharp peaks provide contrast to the dozens of valleys and rivers flowing below. The mountain's main peak is Baekunbong, and it has many different kinds of peaks. The granite peaks blend in well with trees, and there are about 1,300 kinds of animal and plant life living on the mountain. Among the granite peaks, the best one is Insubong Peak's Giam. The world famous granite rock peak Insubong is over 200m above sea level, and there are about 100 mountain paths leading to the rock. When you stand on Baekundae and look down, sometimes you can see clouds and Seoul and the Hangang River all together. Mt. Bukhansan has a rich history as well, not lacking in the cultural treasures it possesses. From the King Jinheung's Sunsubi on Bibong Peak, the Bukhansan seong Fortress built along the mountain's ridges, Sangunsa Temple built by the monk Won-Hyo, and numerous other temples occupy the mountain areas. Bukhansan seong Fortress is also a must-see tour site if you are visiting the mountain. Bukhansan seong Fortress was built with about a 8,500m long wall, built specifically to stop foreign invasion, and is one of the representative mountain fortresses of the Joseon Era. In the fall, especially, the view you can get from the fortress of the mountain is exquisite. Temples also are representative of Mt. Bukhansan's cultural heritage, and among the many of them, Seungasa Temple on the east Bibong Peak, where Seokgayeorae Ma-aebuls are carved onto 5m granite rock, and Munsusa Temple, located halfway up the Munsubong peak, have famous mountain water dripping from the ceiling of Munsugul Cave. Thus, Mt. Bukhansan, with its granite rocks, and Bukhansan seong fortress, is perfect for hiking for all seasons. In the spring, all kinds of flowers bloom, and in the summer, thick forest and valleys spread out. hiking path along the valley is perhaps the best summer mountain climbing course there is. The fall is an especially fit time for visiting the temples and the pavilions in their autumn colors. In the winter, the snow-covered mountain scenery is very beautiful.

    Jirye Art Village
Jirye Artists' Colony is a great place to have a unique experience of Korea. Every month there are events such as making rice cake or kimchi and you can stay in traditional Korean houses. Jirye Artists' Colony is a village with Jisan Seodang (Cultural Asset No.49), Jichonjongtaek (Cultural Asset No.44), and Jichonjecheong (Cultural Asset No.46), which were moved from the Imha Dam area because of the possibility of being flooded.
Jisan Seodang was established in 1800, the 24th year under the reign of King Jeongjo (reign 1752~1800) in remembrance of the achievements of Kim Bang-Geol, as a place for the future generations to study in. Jichonjongtaek is the head house of Kim Bang-Geol's Family. Established in 1712 at his own request, Jichonjecheong was a shrine where sacrificial rites were held, which has been used as an auditorium. Beyond the tile-roofed houses, low mountains surround Jirye Artists' Colony, and there is a lake down from the village. If you pass the tall gate there is a large square and straight ahead is the main building, the schoolhouse on the right and a shrine on the left hill.
Although the village is 350 years old, there are houses with rooms that are heated with wood. Because the village has preserved the old customs with small details, it is a great place to experience and understand Korean traditional culture.
Jirye Artists' Colony is a cultural inquiry spot for foreigners, a creative space for the artists to work, and is also used as a conference space. It is also used as a traditional life study site and as Confucianism institute.

    NAKSAN Park
Naksan Park gets its name from its camel hump-like appearance. In Korean nakta means camel and san means mountain. So people refer to the Park as Nakta Park or Naksan Park. The mountain is solid granite bedrock. The Joseon royal family enjoyed the natural beauty of the granite mountain, but during the Japanese Colonial Period a hasty manner of urban planning resulted in the demolition of most of the mountain. In an effort to save the remaining green belts, Naksan was designated a Park on June 10, 2002. Located in the center of the Seoul, this historical and beautiful Park allows its visitors to view the magnificence of the entire city.

    NAMSAN Park
Mt. Namsan (265m above sea level) is a symbolic mountain located at the center of Seoul. Although not so high, because of its location and view at the top, Mt. Namsan is very popular as a resting site. At the top of Mt. Namsan, there are various facilities such as Palgakjeong (octagonal hall), Seoul Tower, Maritime Aquarium, fountains, botanical gardens and Namsan Library. You may take a cable car to the top or walk up the stairway path. Other than this path, there are many other walkways to Namdaemun, Haehyun-dong, Taegyero 3(sam)-ga, Jangchung Park, Itaewon, Huam-dong etc. The driving courses here are also popular to couples.
Namsan Park is a historical site. You will find Bonghwadae (beacon mound) at the top because it was once the center of capital defense. During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) the capital was changed to Hanyang,(current Seoul) and to protect the city from invasions, castle walls were built on the 4 major mountains like Mt. Bukaksan, Mt. Inwangsan, Mt. Naksan and Mt. Namsan. On Namsan peak, five beacons were built to report the news from local governments to the central government with a five-signal system.
Also on the top of Mt. Namsan, there is the Palgakjeong Pavilion, which has a fantastic view. At Seoul Tower (479.7m), you can view the whole landscape of Seoul and the West Sea beyond Incheon. The rotating restaurant in the Seoul Tower has an excellent view of Seoul. Because night view is excellent from Mt. Namsan, you should try having dinner at the tower and enjoy the night view of Seoul. It would be great as well to visit Namsangol Traditional Korean Village which is a village of 5 traditional Korean houses

    WORLD CUP Park
The World Cup Park was built to commemorate the 17th FIFA World Cup. Opened in May 1st, 2002, the Park was once a 15-year old landfill that held over 92 million tons of garbage. It took 6 years to stabilize the waste (measures were taken to prevent the garbage runoff from contaminating the environment) and an additional year to build the actual Park itself. The Park is located near the Seoul World Cup stadium, and is made up of 5 smaller Parks including the Pyeonghwa (peace) Park, Haneul (sky) Park, and Noeul (sunset) Park. The Park takes up a 1.05 million-pyeong area and is usually crowded with in-line skaters.
Pyeonghwa Park: : Closest to the Seoul World Cup Stadium, it holds a pond, garden, children's playground, and forest. It is often used as a picnic area and place for nature-study.
Nanjicheon Park: The Nanjicheon Park was developed from the Nanji Stream, which flowed under the Haneul Park. It was once overflowing with sewage runoff from the nearby landfill, but it has since been restored into a beautiful Park with clear water. It contains an outdoor stage and various sports facilities.
Nanji Hangang Park :The Nanji Hangang Park was developed on the banks of the Han River. It contains a campground, soccer field, basketball court, grass field, cruise ship port, and an area for nature-studies.
Haneul Park : Of the 5 World Cup Parks, the Haneul Park is at the highest elevation. Once a mountain of garbage, it is now a green hill with 22 lookout points offering breathtaking views of Soul City, Mt. Namsan, Mt. Bukhansan, and Mt. Gwanaksan. 5 wind-powered generators provide power to the Park and the Park's maintenance office.
Noeul Park : The Noeul Park contains a 9-hole golf course and takes up a vast area of land that was once a landfill. The Park was constructed as a grassland because too much development may have caused damage to the environment, due to the buried waste. It offers a scenic view of the Han River and its beautiful sunset.

    YEOUIDO Park
Yeouido Park is a huge Park created to provide recreation, located on Yeouido Island at the center of Seoul. Originally the spot was covered with black asphalt, and people frequented the place for bicycling and rollar skating. The construction to make it a green area began in 1997, and opened officially in February 1999. it is now the place where many city people come to rest and enjoy strolling around, play sports, and cultural events. The Park is divided into theme-based sections: Traditional Korean Forest, Grass Square, Culture Square, and Nature's Ecosystem Forest. In Traditional Korean Forest, only traditional Korean trees are planted, and it has a pond and an octagonal pavilion, with a trail walk that completes the feel of an elegant Korean garden. Grass Square has a low hill, with grass field and trail roads, and nearby there are evergreens and deciduous trees to show the changing seasons. Many performances and events are held at the Cultural Square, and because there are many zelkova trees lined up nearby, it is a great place for people to come and rest. An especially beloved part of the Park is the Nature's Ecosystem Forest ? it is where you can observe nature and learn from an ecologically sensitive pond and forest, right in the middle of the city. Composed of a swamp area, waterline area, grassland area, and a forest, you can observe various kinds of life forms living in these areas. One of the must-see areas when you are visiting Yeouido Park is the Yunjunro Street, behind the National Assembly Building. There are many kinds of birds to make you comfortable. There are picnic tables and chairs for your outdoor picnics. This location of the Yongsan Family Park was a very important place in the past.
